What is S1000D?
The Aerospace and Defense (A&D) Specification S1000D is an international requirement for creating, managing and maintaining technical publications within the civilian and military A&D industry. S1000D is now being embraced by many organizations worldwide that are developing complex A&D systems and equipment. S1000D is being implemented, and in some cases mandated by global Departments of Defense, aircraft manufacturers (civil and military), aircraft operators, shipbuilders, builders of land systems, and manufacturers of most types of equipment designed for defense complexes worldwide.
Today, the S1000D standard is supported by the Aerospace and Defense industries of Europe (ASD) and the Aerospace Industries Association of America (AIA), and is controlled by the Technical Publications Specifications Management Group (TPSMG), which has the full responsibility of maintaining the specification. The TPSMG includes members from both government agencies and industry. To address the rapid development of information technology, a group of specialist, the Electronic Publications Working Group (EPWG), supports the TPSMG in technical matters. In the near future, most companies that either manufacture equipment used in the A&D industry, or supply components to major contractors in A&D, will be required to be in compliance with the S1000D specification. However, since different A&D programs have adopted different versions of S1000D, an A&D supplier should first determine the issues that are relevant to their particular standard.
